Current Projects
Hunyani Projects
Below are projects that are currently underway - and seeking funding.
Fox Proof Fence.
Fundamental to the survival of the turtles in the creek, is the eradication of foxes in the area.
Foxes can smell the turtle nests and within hours of the turtle eggs being laid, the foxes have dug up and destroyed the nest.
Foxes are very clever. The can jump, climb and dig. Fortunately they do not swim. Fox proof fences are designed to stop the prevent foxes entering property.
Hunyani hopes to have the fox proof fence funded soon and built by the end of 2021.
Reforestation of Farming Areas
The Hunyani property has areas of sand hills and more clay based land. The sand hills had the forestation and undergrowth removed by farmers in the mid 1900’s. The sand hill land was primarily planted with tobacco crops and later with lucerne and pasture.
Rebuilding the Bird Population
The bird population is at risk from reduced nesting sites and an ever ending battle against feral cats. It is so disheartening to find the daily carnage of a cat kill.
Cat traps seem to be the only way to combat this problem.
Hunyani has a cat trapping program that is ongoing.
Increase Bio Diversity
Over the years, many native animals have been lost to farming interests.
The bio diversity project includes the reintroduction of a range of native animals such as:
Kangaroos
Emus
Koalas
Wombats
Echidnas
Improve Visitor Experience
The reserve has a three-bedroom house that was built from the foundations of an old tobacco kiln and an adjacent sorting room.
The house is suitable for visitors to stay.
Work is continuing to upgrade the house to be a suitable wildlife get away, to help educate and encourage it’s visitors.
