Table Talk: Six Goanna Facts

Pair your wine with knowledge of Australia’s native animals. This week we feature the goanna. A bit of a super lizard, the goanna has many tactics that allow it to survive harsh conditions.

Here are our favourite top 6;

1. The goanna is a close relative of the Komodo Dragon.

2. There are 25 different goanna species found in Australia.

3. Like snakes, they have a long forked tongue which they use to collect scent molecules of their next victim.

4. They walk on all four legs, but sprint using just their hind legs.

5. Their saliva contains venom.

6. They can survive up to 40 years in the wild

Though not endangered (yet),

the goanna is threatened by habitat loss, fatality on the road and cats and dogs. We try our best to help the goanna continue to live out their 40 years uninterrupted by unnatural predators.
